Did you know that today, 21st October, is Trafalgar Day, marking the victory of the Royal Navy under the command of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 over the Spanish and French fleets. Horatio Nelson was born at nearby Burnham Thorpe on 29th September 1758 and went to sea at the age of 12. He was fatally injured during the Battle of Trafalgar by a French sniper shot and was later buried at St Paul’s Cathedral. The area known as “The Burnhams” are of course inextricably linked with Horatio Nelson but in fact settlements date back to the 6th Century and are named after the Anglo Saxon words for river (burn) and settlement (ham). |

But there’s more to our lovely part of the world too – fascinating fact number 2 coming up – the cliffs at Hunstanton have just been voted “People’s Favourite” in the Coastal category of the UK’s Top 100 Geosites. Just 10 miles away, the colourful stripy cliffs are caused by contrasting layers of red limestone, also known as “red chalk” and white chalk and also noted for their fossils. Well worth a visit! |
